Learning Reflections / 1

This is week one, class one, of my UXD master's program. This reflection is a weekly requirement, and one I am looking forward to writing. The days are long but the years are short, as the saying goes, so this is my chance to slow down, reflect and internalize what I am studying and learning.

This week we started reading the classic text The Design of Everyday Things, by Don Norman. Just one chapter in, but already enjoying learning how psychology intersects with good design.

Understanding how human brains work and putting that knowledge into practice when designing products is critical. I also gained a deeper understanding of affordances and signifiers thanks to the in-depth definitions offered. Affordances being all that's possible and signifiers being how the user understands what's possible.

We were also provided "The User Experience Team Kit" which included the practical information you need when building (or pitching for) a UX team. There was information on team structure, services a UX team provides, recommended job roles with descriptions, and budget ranges to help with planning. This was relevant to me as I am in the relatively early stages of building out a new-to-the-organization UX team. I need to know what it takes to have a strong team and this reference gave some immediately useful guidelines.
